"We explain to the public that Bacho Akhalaia remains in custody," - Prosecutor`s Office publishes statement

The Prosecutor`s Office publishes special announcement on bacho Akhalaia`s process. "ased on the Ruling of July 5, 2015 in this criminal case, imprisonment was imposed on the Defendant – Bachana Akhalaia as the measure of restraint. Since the term of detention on remand of a defendant in a single criminal case shall not exceed 9 months, the measure of restraint was cancelled by a Judge at today"s trial.   
Office of the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia would like to explain to the public that despite the cancellation of the measure of restraint in this criminal case, Bachana Akhalaia remains in custody as he has been convicted in another criminal case and is serving a prison sentence. He has been sentenced to deprivation of liberty by the Judgment of October 22, 2014 handed down in connection with the so-called “Navtlughi Special Operation” case. Bachana Akhalaia was charged with two episodes in this case: torture of prisoners in prison and by the abuse of official powers creating privileged prison conditions to persons convicted in Sandro Girgvliani case. Court found him guilty under Article 1441 §2, Article 332 §1 of the Criminal Code of Georgia and sentenced him to deprivation of liberty for a term of 10 years as the type of penalty. Upon the application of the Law of Georgia on Amnesty and the principle of the absorption of less severe punishment, Bachana Akhalaia was eventually sentenced to deprivation of liberty for a term of 7 years and 6 months."- is stated in announcement.
