International Criminal Court begins investigation of crimes committed during August war

According to REUTERS, the International Criminal Court judges authorised the court"s prosecutor to investigate alleged crimes committed during the brief 2008 war between Georgia and Russian-backed rebels in South Ossetia - the court"s first investigation outside Africa.

In a statement on Wednesday, judges said there was reason to believe crimes against humanity, including murder and persecution, had been committed during the conflict, as well as war crimes including attacks on peacekeepers.
