European Council criticizes the Georgian government for detention of Gigi Ugulava

Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council (PACE) published a report on the abusing of pre-trial detention in Georgia.

"Almost the entire leadership of the former ruling party has been arrested or is under prosecution or investigation."

The report says that among those who have been detained is former Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava.

"Upon request of the Georgian Government, the Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE/ODIHR) published a report monitoring 327 trials of 14 former officials and political figures under prosecution in Georgia following the change of Government in 2012. Among other findings of abuse was the “continued and unreasonable use of pre-trial detention”.  

The members of the PACE Parliamentary Assembly, called on the Georgian authorities to address all the concerns mentioned in the report, but asked to focus in particular on the pre-trial detention of political figures.
